“Affordable Heat Act” (S.5)

I was one of two democrats that voted no on “The Affordable Heat Act” (S.5). I had a number of concerns with this bill, 1) it’s been said that heating fuel could be as high as $.70/gallon, 2) while there are subsidies to purchase a heat pump, many low-medium incomes still could not afford the overall cost, and 3) we do not have the infrastructure for electricity that is needed. The good news is that nothing will happen until the Legislature in the 2025-26 session passes a bill to authorize anything to move forward. This means that S.5 has come out of the Senate only allows the completion of the analytical work needed for program design, but it is for a future Legislature to make a determination that any proposed program makes sense.
